Industrial Theatre Scope
The Eyethu Industrial Theatre fulfills part of the Training and Development project that was initiated by KLOOF Gold Mine, a division of GoldFields Mining SA. It forms part of the GoldFields productivity drive. The outcomes of the theatre would adequately capture the strategic intent of the Productivity drive. The theatre would provide a "springboard" for the Training and Development program for the Teams.
The Pumalo Approach
The project development team included operation staff from the mine, training academy, interested and involved stakeholders and the Pumalo Africa creative team.
The final context was developed and designed through a participative process where the key consultant, training manager and mine representative provided outlines of desired outcomes. The constraints were clarified through alignment to organization values and mine regulations and standards.
Through a creative development process the context was developed into story line and script. On signoff it was then worked into a physical theatre product, designed for presentation on a stage with full audio and visual effects.
Industrial Theatre Outcomes
The industrial theatre product has taken the cultural context of each division into account and designed a context - specific stage production to communicate matters of ‘values’ towards a performance culture.
Through consultation with the Team Mobilization process drivers, the then Gold Fields Academy team and mine representatives, each context has created its own identity and story line. To date over five thousand Gold Fields employees and even some of their families have tasted the theatre experienced and many have told of how it has influenced the manner in which they understand their work opportunities on the mine.
The Industrial Theatre has become the central piece of communication in the Training and Development environment.
The Eyethu Theatre has established a visible presence and allowed a branding opportunity for the Team Development process.
The Theatre piece addresses the development of an organizational culture with emphasis of elements of safety, team, communication, trust, loyalty and dedication, and unity in diversity (ubuntu).
The theatre creates a life-like expression of behavior based safety issues of the underground mining environment.
Attendees of the training process experience a surround sound and intelligent lighting enhanced, full sensory learning opportunity.
