The scope:
The Kriel Colliery Ubuntu Safety Show would form the primary training and development tool as well as a communication tool for the implementation of the safety strategy at Kriel Colliery, AngloCoal South Africa. It would comprise an industrial theatre element, an experiential learning element and support Behavior Based Safety training and communication.
The Pumalo approach:
The project development team included safety and operation staff from the mine, interested and involved stakeholders and the Pumalo Africa creative team.
The final context was developed and designed through a participative process where safety manager and mine representative provided outlines of desired outcomes. The constraints were clarified through alignment to organization values, transformation goals and mine regulations and standards.
Through a creative development process the context was developed into a story line and script. On signoff it was then worked into a physical theatre product, designed for presentation in a newly furbished hall allocated specifically for the process.
The outcomes:
The Kriel Colliery Ubuntu Safety Show won awards for addressing safety within the group. The Colliery continued to enjoy a phenomenal period of safety achievements.
The industrial theatre effectively communicated the introduction of a culture of safety in the mine. The intervention also provided a platform for BBS to be further entrenched in the life of the mine.
Pumalo Africa was invited to present two follow on communication processes. The last of which addressed peak accident factors of the silly season.
