Industrial Theatre Scope
The Dumela Industrial Theatre fulfills part of the Team Mobilzation efforts initiated at Driefontein Gold Mine, a division of GoldFields Mining SA. It forms part of the GoldFields productivity drive.
The Pumalo Approach
Receiving mandate from the Gold Fields Business and Leadership Academy, the industrial theatre was extended to the third South African operational site in GoldFields. Through extensive stakeholder participation and alignment with mine strategy and goals, the Dumela piece took to the stage in the midst of great environmental strain. Although not designed to focus on the safety culture, the intervention was first exposed to the entire safety representative population of the mine.
Industrial Theatre Outcomes
The industrial theatre product has taken the cultural context of each division into account and designed a context - specific stage production to communicate matters of ‘values’ towards a performance culture.
Through consultation with the Team Mobilization process drivers, the then Gold Fields Academy team and mine representatives, each context has created its own identity and story line. To date over five thousand Gold Fields employees and even some of their families have tasted the theatre experienced and many have told of how it has influenced the manner in which they understand their work opportunities on the mine.
The Dumela Industrial theatre remains pivitol to the mine training and development environment. The Industrial theatre piece has been adapted and employed to address additional safety issues. The most recent adaptation was to play a role in the implementation of a new strategy to address a culture of safety throughout the mine.
